FAQs

Think of them as your regular check-in with CRA where you report all the HST you’ve collected from your customers. It’s basically combining federal GST with provincial sales tax into one package (because who needs extra paperwork, right?).

If you’re making between $1.5 and $6 million a year, CRA wants to hear from you every quarter. That’s their rule, but here’s something most people don’t know – you can actually switch to monthly if that works better for your cash flow.

Here’s the timing breakdown: Let’s say your quarter runs January through March. You’ve got until April 30th to get your HST return filed and paid up. Simple as that.

Now, if you’re bringing in more than $6 million, CRA’s going to want to see you monthly – no choice there. Making less than $1.5 million? You can file once a year, but honestly, some businesses prefer to file more often to keep their cash flow smoother.

The magic number is $30,000. If you’re making less than that in worldwide sales over any 12-month period, you don’t have to jump into the HST game. And yeah, I said worldwide sales, not just what you’re making here in Canada.

But hold up – there are a couple of things you need to know:

First off, we’re not just talking about calendar years here. CRA looks at any 12-month stretch, so if you hit that $30,000 mark at any point, boom – you need to register.

Here’s something interesting though – even if you’re under that $30,000 mark, sometimes it actually makes sense to register anyway. Why? Well, if you’re dealing with other businesses or have plans to grow, being HST registered might put more money in your pocket through input tax credits.

The second you cross that $30,000 line, though, CRA wants you in the system. No IFS, ANDs, or Buts about it.

If you making $1.5 million or less? You can file once a year. But here’s the thing – some business owners like to file more often just to keep their cash flow smoother. Hey, whatever helps you sleep at night.

If you’re bringing in between $1.5 and $6 million, CRA wants to see you every quarter. That’s just their rule. Though honestly, some folks in this bracket choose monthly filing to keep things more manageable.

Now, if you’re crushing it with over $6 million in sales – first off, nice work! But yeah, you’re looking at monthly filings. No way around that one.

Here’s a pro tip, though – even if you don’t have any HST to pay or haven’t done any business, you still need to file those returns. CRA just likes to know you’re thinking about them, I guess
